We will be celebrating AFL Community Umpiring Round across the AFL Barwon region. This year we are asking clubs to help highlight the benefits of umpiring to your players, coaches, officials and supporters and show your support to all umpires who step out on the field each week. AFL Barwon heavily rely on club umpires to officiate games and Community Umpire round is a fantastic way to highlight and publicly thank those who blow the whistle or wave the flags for your club.

To give you some stats around umpiring numbers,

  • there are 237 games played each week,
  • The minimum number of umpires required to cover all games across the AFL Barwon region is 1477
  • The number of Registered Umpires currently is 511 (130 are club registered umpires)
  • Most Umpires are currently officiating a minimum of 2 game a weekend, this can be as high as 4
  • There are 36 Female and 1 non-binary registered umpires representing 7% of umpires in our Region

AFL Barwon are always available to speak with your club regarding umpiring, laws, Club Umpire Programs or simply how to support and promote umpiring on match day.

Below I have listed some ideas that clubs could use to help promote Community Umpire Round

Some of the easiest ways clubs can support Umpires:

Thank the umpires pre and post game,

Acknowledge your club umpire at training, Thursday night meals, club newsletters, Social media posts etc.
